Kali Uchis’ debut album is a bright spot in this month’s list of new releases. With this record, the Colombian-American singer showsthat she is in a league of her own. It shows her having a complete grasp of her musical talents as she seamlessly pulls inspiration from a long list of different genres and sounds to create something beautiful. With just a quick listen, one can quickly identify hints of funk, and R&B with a bit of reggaetón in her sound. Needless to say, she has the potential to truly become a powerful force in the world of pop.
She opens the album with a cool sampling of some Brazilian-jazz before rounding out her intro with her psychedelic and dazzling vocals. The opening song cannot but evoke images of warm sunny beaches, great cocktails, and tropical weather. The parallelism between her singing and that of Rio goddess Flora Purim would inevitably come to mind. Such comparisons are not made lightly, so you can understand just how much we love her work here.
As may have surmised by now, we are clearly in love with this record.
